About Claryx
Claryx is building the hospital immune system, reading the genomes of confirmed patient infections, linking related cases as outbreaks, and tracing each back to its likely source. When that source is in the building (a sink, a shared piece of equipment, a particular room), Claryx finds it by matching the patient's strain against a digital twin of the hospital's microbiome, sequenced from its air, its water and its surfaces, all on proprietary chemistry cheap enough to run continuously. Founded by brothers Kurt and Dirk Hackenberger, Claryx is based in New York and is live across multiple health systems.
The Role
We’re hiring a Computational Scientist to take over Claryx’s compute platform: the bioinformatics pipelines, the AWS infrastructure they run on, and the compliance posture that lets us work inside healthcare systems. That platform is the foundation to build deep-learning-based epidemiological modelling of how pathogens move through a facility.
The list below is in priority order for the first year. We don't expect anyone to arrive as an expert in all of it, but we do need someone who can take on the first two immediately. We're early-stage, so whoever takes this role will be setting technical direction rather than following it and making use of existing agentic coding tools to maximize their output.
Key Responsibilities
• Bioinformatics pipelines. Running and hardening our metagenomic and comparative genomics pipelines, from QC through strain-level comparison between clinical isolates and environmental samples.
• Cloud infrastructure. AWS environment. Solidify infrastructure-as-code, proper CI/CD, predictable costs.
• Compliance. Deepen HIPAA/SOC 2 controls to maintain compliance and remain audit-ready.
• Results communication. Move reporting off static outputs onto an interactive dashboard.
• The modelling layer. Represent a facility as a network of reservoirs and train deep-learning transmission models over it to attribute sources, forecast spread, and test interventions before we recommend them.
Qualifications
• PhD preferred. Computational/biology focus. Other levels of education with a strong portfolio welcome.
• Python, Linux/bash, Git. Nextflow preferred for workflows. Dashboard experience is a plus.
• Machine learning. Experience with ML classifiers and deep learning. GNNs and network model experience is a plus.
• Agentic coding tools. Structuring problems, managing context, reading generated code critically.
• AWS in production. IAM, S3, Batch, Terraform. HIPAA/SOC 2 experience is a plus.
• Basic Biology. You don’t need to be a microbiologist, but you should understand the underlying principles. Real genomics experience is a plus.
Practicalities
For strong performers, this role has the potential to grow into Director of Data & Platform, expanding across the modelling stack, data platform, and security posture, and eventually taking on a team. You’d report to the CTO and work closely with our computational epidemiologist and the wet lab. It’s fully onsite in Long Island City, in the same space as the lab generating the data.
We publish, and we’d support you doing the same. We collaborate with academic groups and public health labs. If part of what you want from a role is that the work ends up in the literature rather than only in a product, that’s compatible with this one.

Long Island City, NY · Onsite, Full-Time · Reports to Laboratory Lead
$68,000–$82,000/year, plus equity and benefits. Must be authorized to work full-time in the US.
The Role
We’re hiring a Laboratory Technician to help run our existing molecular workflow: nucleic acid extraction from complex environmental samples and isolates, qPCR panels, and library prep for sequencing. It’s a hands-on support role alongside our Laboratory Lead, and the main job is keeping that workflow running reliably as sample volume grows.
Our partners send samples on a fixed weekly schedule, so the week has a rhythm we don’t set. Collection, extraction, assays and sequencing each have to happen in a set window for the next step to work, and everything downstream depends on that timing holding. You don’t need to have done every step before - we’re happy to train someone careful and reliable.
Key Responsibilities
• Sample processing. Accession incoming samples and take them through extraction across air, water, surface and swab matrices, under strict contamination control.
• Molecular assays. Run qPCR/RT-qPCR panels for our priority pathogens and resistance targets, plus library prep for sequencing.
• Automation. Operate an automated liquid handler and help move manual steps onto it.
• Field collection. Scheduled sample pickups from partner hospitals, maintaining chain of custody.
• Lab operations. Inventory, reagent prep, instrument upkeep, and complete ELN/LIMS records.
• Optimization. Identify workflow steps that can be improved and develop/test modifications.
Qualifications
• B.S. or higher. Molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or similar. 0–2 years of hands-on experience, including laboratory work for grad school. BSL-2 experience is a plus.
• Core molecular techniques. Nucleic acid extraction and qPCR. Library prep, protein purification, and automated liquid handling experience are a plus.
• Careful record-keeping. ELN/LIMS discipline to maintain strong documentation of all samples.
• Valid driver’s license. The role includes scheduled sample pickups.
Practicalities
For strong performers, this role has the potential to grow into a Research Associate and then a Senior Research Associate position, with more independence over assay development, QC ownership, and training the people we hire after you. You’d report to the Laboratory Lead and work closely with our computational team. It’s fully onsite in Long Island City. The work is BSL-2 and includes weekly travel to partner sites around New York City.
